Why do you need custom gift bags?

As the project lead, you want your event to stand out and leave a lasting impression on your guests, right? Custom gift bags not only enhance the event atmosphere but also provide participants with a memorable keepsake:

Enhance the event’s thematic atmosphere

Custom gift bags can be printed with event or brand logos, themed designs, and slogans, instantly immersing attendees in the event’s atmosphere the moment they receive them. Whether you’re organizing a holiday party, a corporate summit, or a wedding, custom gift bags with a unified visual design will immediately elevate the cohesiveness and professionalism of your entire event, setting it apart from generic, off-the-shelf gift bags purchased at random.

Memorable Souvenirs

Attractive and practical gift bag ideas will encourage event attendees to keep them as souvenirs (we recommend custom gift bags made from reusable materials like canvas or polyester). They can take them home and continue using them in their daily lives, ensuring long-term exposure for your brand and event information—unlike ordinary disposable bags, which are usually thrown away immediately after use.

Various Gift Bag Ideas

You’ve already prepared the event plan—now all that’s left is to come up with gift bag ideas that will help your event stand out. When your gift bag ideas align with the event theme, everyone will feel the care that went into organizing the event. Based on the event theme, I’ve listed details on gift bag ideas (appearance, gifts, and brand examples) that you can use directly as a reference for your project:

birthday party gift bag ideas

Whether it’s a children’s birthday party or a themed party for adults, well-curated birthday goodie bag ideas can instantly take the party experience to the next level. However, many people tend to fall into one of two extremes when putting together birthday goodie bags: either they’re overly flashy and look cheap, or they’re so empty that guests throw them away as soon as they receive them.

Kids’ Edition

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Bright, lively, and highly saturated colors that better capture children’s attention
  • Printing: Themed designs featuring cartoon animals, space, princesses, dinosaurs, and other motifs, as well as cartoon portraits of the birthday child
  • Handles: Shorter handles that fit better in children’s hands
  • Details: Die-cut bags shaped like cakes and balloons; a tag holder added to the bag opening for handwriting guests’ names

Gift Ideas:

  • Themed Stationery: Designed to fit seamlessly into children’s daily school life and remind them of this birthday party whenever they use it
  • Themed Stickers: Take them out of the gift bags and stick them on items as they enter the birthday party
  • Packaged Candy: No child can resist candy
  • Thank-You Cards: Handwritten messages make the cards feel more special to the recipients

Note: The number of gifts included in children’s gift sets is typically limited to 5–8 items. The cost per item does not need to be too high; the focus should be on variety. When selecting a gift bag, we recommend choosing a medium-sized option (W25–30 cm × D10–13 cm × H32–38 cm) rather than a mini size, as the mini size will not be large enough to hold all the small items.

When customizing Disney children’s birthday goodie bags, 210g matte-laminated art paper is commonly used. The bag features spot embossing to highlight cartoon characters and vibrant scenes, and the opening is reinforced with rigid cardboard to ensure it can easily hold a gift pack of toys and stationery weighing over 3 kg.

Adult Version

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Black and gold, low-saturation Morandi colors
  • Printing: Spot foil stamping for the birthday slogan and the birthday recipient’s initials; avoid using childish patterns over large areas
  • Details: Leave space at the top of the bag for a tag; create a custom name tag to enhance the sense of occasion

Gift Ideas:

  • Handcrafted Items: Scented candles, handmade soaps, and other crafts that offer both collectible and practical value
  • Custom Badges: Featuring the party’s exclusive date and logo, perfect for long-term keepsakes
  • Fruit Wine Samples: For mixing personalized drinks to share with guests during the party
  • Artistic Postcards: Postcards with personalized messages for the birthday celebrant, helping to create an emotional connection

Tip: When preparing gifts for adults, it’s not the quantity but the quality that matters. Also, when choosing the size of the gift bag, err on the side of a larger size to prevent the corners of the gifts from tearing the bag.

High-end party gift bags in the “THE BEAST” style typically feature 180–200g faux-leather paper paired with woven handles. The exterior displays only a small area with a matte gold-foiled logo, while the interior is lined with silk satin for shock protection. These bags are perfectly designed to hold mini perfumes and fruit wine samples, maximizing the high-end, light-luxury feel.

corporate gift bag ideas

Corporate gift bags aren’t meant to be flashy or eye-catching; their core purpose is to convey a professional and reliable brand image. Many projects run into trouble by applying the same approach used for party goodie bags to corporate settings—printing a large number of intricate designs—which actually makes the bags appear less professional and lowers clients’ perception of the brand.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Choose the brand’s primary VI colors—low-distraction business tones such as dark blue, charcoal gray, and off-white—and avoid highly saturated, vibrant colors as much as possible.
  • Printing: Focus primarily on small-area gold or silver foil stamping and embossed company logos and slogans; avoid full-page, intricate prints. Consider adding an external card pocket for business cards or invitations.
  • Details: Use wide woven straps, cotton cord, or reinforced paper handles. When distributing in large quantities, prioritize reinforcing the bag opening with cardboard to improve the bag’s structural integrity.

Gift Ideas:

  • Practical Office Items: Custom notebooks, metal ballpoint pens, and portable power banks are designed for everyday office use, helping to reinforce brand recall as participants use them repeatedly over time.
  • Corporate Merchandise: Branded pins, eco-friendly travel mugs, and canvas bags combine practicality with brand exposure.
  • Lightweight gifts: Coffee and tea samples, hand cream gift sets—perfect for clients to carry with them and use in their daily lives.

Note: Items placed in gift bags for business settings are often quite heavy, and when items such as laptops, metal pens, and portable power banks are combined, the weight places high demands on the gift bag’s load-bearing capacity. We recommend using specialty paper or white cardstock weighing 250g or more, or 12oz pure cotton canvas for the bag body. The seams at the handles must be reinforced with cross-stitching or rivets to prevent the bag from tearing or the handles from breaking when customers carry it.

The VIP corporate gift bag for Microsoft’s Business Developer Summit features a dark gray, heavyweight, eco-friendly non-woven fabric bag with discreet, wide woven handles. The bag is embossed with a minimalist logo in a small size in the lower right corner. The bag contains a custom, high-quality metal ballpoint pen, a GaN (gallium nitride) fast charger, and a minimalist leather notebook to enhance practicality both at the event and afterward.

halloween gift bag ideas

Halloween gift bags are characterized by the festive atmosphere and fun they bring to holiday activities. If the designs on the gift bags are too plain, they won’t capture the holiday spirit, so we strive to make the designs as vibrant as possible and may even incorporate glow-in-the-dark features.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Features classic Midnight Black, Pumpkin Orange, Dark Purple, and Vintage Green to enhance the festive atmosphere and brand recognition.
  • Printing: Classic Halloween elements such as jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts, spider webs, bats, skeletons, and witches. Select characters or patterns can be printed with laser silver or glow-in-the-dark ink to enhance the ambiance of nighttime events.
  • Details: Options include serrated bag edges, die-cut cutouts, dark-themed hangtags, and black-and-orange ribbons to add a three-dimensional effect to the gift bags.

Gift Ideas:

  • Holiday Candy: Halloween-exclusive candies, pumpkin chocolates, and gummy assortments are Halloween staples.
  • Themed Toys: Glow-in-the-dark stickers, small pumpkin figurines, ghost keychains, novelty rings, and mask accessories are very useful for festive activities (you can print your brand logo on these items).
  • Souvenirs: Halloween-themed postcards, holiday sticker packs, and mini mood lights are perfect for young visitors to collect and share on social media.

Note: Since Halloween events tend to attract large crowds, we recommend using laminated paper or thick non-woven fabric—materials that are sturdy and tear-resistant—for the goodie bags. Additionally, since children’s items often consist of small, loose pieces and children will continue to ask for candy throughout the event, we suggest allowing ample room for the contents to expand to prevent the bag opening from becoming too tight and tearing once the bag is full.

Party City’s Halloween gift bags feature glow-in-the-dark ink printing and a black-and-orange color-blocking design as their core concepts. The bags feature large areas of minimalist white space paired with small glow-in-the-dark bat motifs, creating a clean look during the day and a spooky effect when they glow at night. Each bag is filled with a uniform assortment of Halloween candy sets, stickers, and mini novelty toys, and is distributed through in-store retail and theme park events during Halloween.

christmas gift bag ideas

This is a major holiday celebrated almost everywhere in the world, so if your design is too plain or simple, it will be hard to catch customers’ attention. Using an abundance of snowflake, reindeer, and candy cane motifs, along with special techniques, can quickly create the unique, warm atmosphere of Christmas.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Primarily features classic Christmas colors—crimson, forest green, off-white, and gold foil—with a harmonious blend of warm and cool tones.
  • Printing: Classic Christmas motifs such as Christmas trees, snowflakes, reindeer, Santa Claus, gingerbread men, and Christmas wreaths. Select areas can be enhanced with gold or silver foil stamping, or laser-cut snowflake effects to add a touch of elegance.
  • Details: Features such as a wavy bag opening, die-cut snowflake cutouts, and Christmas-themed tags—paired with red-and-green striped woven ribbons or gold-threaded cord handles—further enhance the gift bag’s three-dimensional elegance.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Desserts: Limited-edition Christmas chocolates, candy gift boxes, and gingerbread treats are classic Christmas gifts.
  • Themed Trinkets: Snowflake stickers, mini Christmas ornaments, Christmas tree decorations, and Christmas-themed pins—you can also print your brand logo on these items for subtle brand exposure.
  • Promotional Gifts: Scented sample sachets, holiday-themed postcards, and thermos keychains—perfect as keepsakes for visiting guests and in-store customers.

Tip: During Christmas—whether for retail sales at supermarkets and stores, gift-with-purchase promotions, or holiday event giveaways—foot traffic is very high. For gift bags, prioritize using 250g laminated art paper with excellent stiffness or thick non-woven fabric. Since gifts often include pastries and multiple small accessories, the volume increases when items are stacked. Be sure to allow ample room for expansion to prevent the bag from tearing when filled.

Target’s Christmas gift bag features hot-stamped snowflakes and a red-and-green color-blocking scheme as its core design elements. The bag’s body features ample white space, accented only by hot-stamped reindeer and snowflake motifs in select areas, ensuring it doesn’t look cluttered or crowded. The bag contains a Christmas chocolate gift box, holiday stickers, and mini ornaments, making it suitable for both standalone sale on store shelves and as a free gift with purchase during holiday promotions.

easter gift bag ideas

Easter gift bags are meant to be used in conjunction with an egg hunt. If they’re designed to be too dull or heavy, they’ll completely lose the lighthearted and vibrant spirit of Easter. Therefore, you can incorporate iconic elements like Easter eggs and bunnies, paired with a fresh and soft color palette, into the design.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Focus on soft, spring-like pastels such as macaron pink, pale duck egg yellow, mint green, and light lavender; these low-saturation, soft colors complement the springtime vibe of Easter.
  • Printing: Classic Easter motifs such as Easter eggs, lop-eared rabbits, chicks, tulips, butterflies, and palm branches. Select areas can be printed with pearlescent gold foil or pearlescent ink to mimic the warm luster of Easter eggs, enhancing the soft and refined aesthetic.
  • Details: Features include a rounded, wavy bag opening, egg-shaped die-cut cutouts, and a spring floral tag, paired with light-colored cotton cord or satin ribbon handles to enhance the light, three-dimensional look of spring.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Sweets: Chocolate Easter eggs, fruit hard candies, and mini cookies are standard gifts for Easter egg hunts.
  • Themed Trinkets: Decorated Easter egg ornaments, bunny-shaped stickers, mini plush toys, and flower pins—you can print your brand logo on these items to boost your brand exposure.
  • Souvenirs: Spring-themed postcards, mini gardening seed packets (which can also be made into cards), and coloring kits are perfect keepsakes for children and families participating in the Easter egg hunt.

Note: Many of these Easter-themed bags are used for outdoor egg hunts. Since outdoor environments are prone to dust and dew, avoid using thin, standard paper whenever possible. Instead, prioritize waterproof and moisture-resistant options such as laminated white cardstock or thick non-woven fabric. The bags will contain multiple small items—such as colored eggs, snacks, and small toys—which take up a lot of space when stacked. Be sure to allow for extra room to accommodate the bulk of the contents, preventing the bag from tearing when filled.

Retail giant Walmart’s Easter gift bag features pearlescent ink-printed Easter egg patterns paired with a pastel macaron color palette as its core design concepts. The bag features large areas of white space, with only a few small rabbit and Easter egg motifs scattered throughout, avoiding a cluttered or flashy look. Inside the bag, the package includes Easter egg-shaped chocolates, cartoon stickers, and mini painted toys to drive creative holiday sales.

thanksgiving gift bag ideas

Thanksgiving gift bags should emphasize a warm, rustic harvest atmosphere. If the design leans toward being flashy or garish, it will stray from the core spirit of Thanksgiving—gratitude and the harvest. By incorporating elements such as autumn crops and fallen leaves, paired with an earth-tone color palette, the Thanksgiving theme is better highlighted.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Focuses on warm earth tones such as caramel brown, pumpkin orange, terracotta red, mustard yellow, and beige-apricot, which better reflect the festive spirit of the autumn harvest.
  • Printing: Classic Thanksgiving elements such as turkeys, harvest pumpkins, wheat ears, maple leaves, acorns, corn cobs, and short Thanksgiving messages. Selective areas can feature antique bronze foil stamping or embossing to mimic the textures of burlap and wood, enhancing the vintage, rustic feel.
  • Details: Features can include an irregularly torn-edge bag opening, maple-leaf-shaped die-cut cutouts, and a Thanksgiving-themed tag with a kraft paper texture. Paired with yellow-brown cotton-linen twine or woven fabric handles, these elements enhance the three-dimensional, rustic, and vintage aesthetic.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Desserts: Caramel candies, pumpkin-flavored cookies, mini nut gift boxes, small jars of honey—must-haves for Thanksgiving gatherings
  • Themed Accessories: Maple leaf-shaped stickers, autumn harvest-themed badges, small wooden ornaments, vintage bookmarks
  • Gift Items: Thanksgiving-themed postcards, handwritten greeting cards, mini air fresheners, and dried flower decorative cards—perfect for guests at family gatherings, community participants, and supermarket customers to keep as mementos.

Tip: During family gatherings and outdoor community events, you may encounter food grease stains. Try to avoid using uncoated thin paper; instead, opt for grease- and water-resistant coated kraft paper or thick non-woven fabric. Since the bags will contain nuts, snacks, and multiple small items, they take up a lot of space when stacked, so be sure to allow for extra room to accommodate the bulk.

Retail brand Kroger’s Thanksgiving gift bag features a bronze-gold embossed finish and an earthy, harvest-inspired color palette as its core design elements. The bag features large areas of white space with a minimalist arrangement of pumpkin, wheat, and maple leaf motifs, avoiding an overly cluttered look. Filled with a small box of nuts, cookies, and a themed greeting card, it’s perfect for exchanging gifts during Thanksgiving.

valentine’s day gift bag ideas

Valentine’s Day gift bags emphasize a romantic atmosphere and the expression of emotions. If the design is too plain or ordinary, it will be difficult to convey the sweet spirit of the holiday. By incorporating iconic symbols such as hearts and roses, paired with soft color schemes and special craftsmanship, you can quickly amplify the romantic vibe of Valentine’s Day.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Featuring burgundy, bean paste pink, rose pink, cream white, and light rose purple—soft, sweet tones that complement the romantic atmosphere of Valentine’s Day.
  • Printing: Classic Valentine’s Day elements such as hearts, red roses, Cupid, ribbons, romantic quotes, and champagne. Select areas can feature red gold foil stamping, matte silver foil stamping, or pearlescent UV coating to mimic the delicate sheen of flower petals, enhancing the romantic and refined aesthetic.
  • Details: Features include a heart-shaped arched bag opening, heart-shaped die-cut cutouts, and a romantic message tag. Paired with a burgundy satin ribbon or thin cotton cord handle to enhance the three-dimensional effect.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Desserts: Heart-shaped chocolates, rose-flavored hard candies, and heart-shaped cookie gift boxes—classic Valentine’s Day favorites.
  • Themed Accessories: Heart-shaped stickers, rose brooches, heart-shaped keychains, and romantic pins (be sure to print your brand logo)
  • Companion Gifts: Love-themed postcards, scented sample sachets, mini dried-flower cards, and small accessories for couples—perfect for couples to exchange, as well as for store customers and event participants to keep as mementos.

Note: For Valentine’s Day, these items are primarily used for in-store retail and as gifts in couples’ gift sets. The gifts consist mainly of perfume samples and glass ornaments, which have sharp edges. Therefore, prioritize using 250g laminated coated paper or heavy-duty non-woven fabric, and ensure the bag openings are reinforced.

Beauty retailer Ulta’s Valentine’s Day gift bag features a red-gold embossed heart design and a pink-burgundy color combination as its core design elements. The bag features large areas of white space, accented with scattered small hearts and rose-inspired line patterns, avoiding an overly flashy look. Inside, the bag contains heart-shaped chocolates, perfume samples, and beauty stickers for sale as part of the Valentine’s Day promotional campaign.

mardi gras gift bag ideas

Carnivals are known for their lively and exuberant party atmosphere. If the colors and designs of the gift bags at the event are too subdued and understated, they completely lose the spirit of uninhibited celebration that defines a carnival.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Featuring the classic Carnival colors of purple, gold, and green, with bold color combinations that create a strong visual impact and faithfully recreate the festival’s iconic color palette.
  • Printing: Classic Carnival elements such as masks, feathers, pearl strands, trumpets, polka dots, festive clowns, and garlands. Select areas can feature hot stamping or rainbow holographic effects to simulate the dazzling sparkle of sequins, enhancing the bag’s glamorous and festive feel.
  • Details: Features include a wavy-edged bag opening, die-cut mask-shaped cutouts, and festive gold-foil hangtags, paired with a purple-gold-green woven satin ribbon handle to reinforce the lively and opulent three-dimensional appearance.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Desserts: Colorful candy beads, fruit hard candies, mini colorful cookies
  • Themed Accessories: Feather mask stickers, colorful beaded bracelets, party badges, and small plastic makeup masks to help participants get into the carnival spirit on the spot
  • Souvenirs: Carnival-themed postcards, colorful feather keychains, and festive banners to take home as keepsakes after the event

Note: Carnival events typically involve outdoor parades and street handouts, where the environment is unpredictable and materials are prone to getting wet or stained by rain or drinks. Avoid using uncoated thin paper; instead, opt for coated white cardstock or heavy-duty non-woven fabric.

The Mardi Gras gift bag from the supermarket retail brand Dollar Genera features a rainbow laser-cut design and a bold color-blocking scheme of purple, gold, and green as its core design elements. The bag features large areas of negative space, with simple masks and feather-like line patterns arranged in a staggered, minimalist layout to avoid looking overly cluttered. Inside, the bag contains colorful beaded strings, themed candies, and mini party masks, and is distributed as giveaways during local Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans.

Soccer Gift Bags ideas

Soccer-themed gift bags are commonly used at youth soccer tournaments, fan events, club merchandise giveaways, and soccer camps. The overall design should exude the passionate, energetic atmosphere of the field. If the design is too plain or ordinary, it will be difficult to ignite the enthusiasm of fans and young players. The best creative approach is to incorporate plenty of soccer-themed patterns and even soccer ball shapes.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Focus on classic black and white, team colors, bright red, royal blue, and vivid green. Color schemes can be based on the target team’s primary colors to strengthen fans’ sense of identity.
  • Printing: Classic soccer elements such as soccer balls, soccer field turf textures, soccer cleats, goals, trophies, player silhouettes, and team crests. Select areas can feature silver foil stamping and halftone UV coating to simulate the textured leather surface of a soccer ball, enhancing the sporty feel.
  • Details: Features include circular die-cut corners shaped like a soccer ball, die-cut cutouts in the shape of a trophy, and sports-themed hangtags. Paired with reinforced nylon webbing handles that are tear-resistant and suitable for frequent handling in sports settings.

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Sweets: Sports energy candies, fruit hard candies, mini energy granola bars, and snacks for event refueling.
  • Themed Souvenirs: Soccer stickers, mini soccer ball keychains, team badges, and miniature whistles.
  • Merchandise: Soccer-themed postcards, sports wristbands, and mini soccer star cards—perfect for young players and fans to take home as keepsakes after the event.

Note: Since soccer activities are mostly held on outdoor fields, where there is a lot of dust and occasional water sprinkling or light rain, avoid using thin, uncoated paper. Instead, prioritize coated white cardstock or heavy-duty non-woven fabric. When placing hard, small items such as whistles or keychains inside the bag, they can easily scratch the bag’s surface, so be sure to allow for extra space when selecting the size.

Sports retail brand Dick’s Sporting Goods’ “Soccer Gift Bags” feature a UV printing process that simulates soccer ball texture, combined with contrasting colors based on team primary colors as their core design concepts. The bags feature large areas of white space, with minimalist accents of soccer ball and soccer shoe outlines, creating a clean, uncluttered look. Inside, each bag contains a sports wristband, soccer stickers, and energy snacks, making them ideal products for World Cup-themed marketing campaigns.

Basketball Gift Bags ideas

Basketball-themed gift bags are commonly used in youth basketball leagues, fan meet-and-greets, club merchandise giveaways, and basketball summer camps. The overall design should capture the dynamic and energetic atmosphere of the court.

Design Concept:

  • Color Scheme: Primarily features classic orange and black, the team’s representative colors, true red, navy blue, and pure white. The color scheme can be tailored to match the primary colors of the target team to deepen fans’ sense of belonging (similar to the soccer design, differing only in color).
  • Printing: Classic basketball elements such as basketballs, basketball court floor textures, basketball shoes, basketball hoops, championship trophies, player silhouettes, and team logos. Select areas can feature orange-gold foil stamping and halftone UV coating to replicate the grainy texture of a basketball’s surface and enhance the athletic feel.
  • Details: Features include curved die-cut bag corners resembling a basketball, die-cut cutouts in the shape of a trophy, and sports-themed hangtags. Paired with thick, abrasion-resistant nylon webbing handles that are tear-resistant and suitable for repeated use in outdoor sports settings. (In short, this design replaces soccer-themed elements with basketball-themed ones.)

Gift Ideas:

  • Candy and Desserts: Sports energy candies, fruit hard candies, and mini granola bars, as snacks for on-field activities (e.g., soccer)
  • Themed Gadgets: Basketball stickers, mini basketball keychains, team patches, plastic cheering whistles
  • Merchandise: Basketball-themed postcards, sports sweat-wicking wristbands, star player trading cards—for young players and fans to take home as keepsakes after the event (similar to soccer, but with different design elements)

Retailer Fanatics’ Basketball Gift Bags feature a UV-printed wood-grain pattern inspired by basketball courts and team-themed color-blocking as their core design elements. The bags feature large areas of negative space, with minimalist accents of basketball hoop and ball outlines, creating a clean, uncluttered look. Inside, each bag contains fan stickers, team patches, and energy snacks, making them ideal marketing products for fan activities at the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Tips for Putting Together the Perfect Gift Bag for Your Project

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably already come up with plenty of ideas for your project. But don’t rush—first, let me share some tips on how to put together the perfect gift bag for your project, which will help you plan gift bag usage for any event (whether you’re a project manager, a buyer, or a designer):

What Should You Put in Your Project Gift Bag?

When preparing small gifts to include in gift bags for a project, many people tend to think that more is better, but this approach can actually lead to overlooking whether the items are appropriate for the event itself. When selecting and packing gifts, it’s important to make a comprehensive selection based on the event’s theme, target audience, and project context.

When choosing gifts, you can broadly categorize them as: themed souvenirs, practical everyday items, and light snacks and sweets (no one, anywhere, would ever turn down snacks and sweets).

  • Themed Souvenirs: These serve as take-home mementos for guests after the event. Be sure to print your brand logo on them to ensure ongoing, subtle brand exposure. Choose specific items based on the event theme from the corresponding categories listed above.
  • Practical Consumables: Practical consumables enhance guests’ actual experience and won’t be discarded immediately after receipt.
  • Snacks and Desserts: While snacks and desserts are better suited for on-site parties and festive occasions to quickly set the mood, they are actually suitable for any setting—they simply don’t create as much of an atmosphere as they do at party-style events.

Tip: When selecting items, try to avoid those that are sharp, too heavy, or too bulky. Items with sharp edges can easily tear the bag; items that are too heavy will put a strain on the handles and the bag itself. If you cannot avoid such items, be sure to test the load-bearing capacity and portability of the gift bags using samples before the event begins to prevent damage during use.

Why shouldn’t you overfill a gift bag?

This is the most common pitfall when purchasing or customizing gift bags. Even if your gift bags meet all requirements for material and weight capacity, overfilling them can still cause them to tear, leading to a series of problems for your brand’s event.

  • When gift bags are overfilled and stretched too tight, the bag opening and seams are subjected to constant strain, making them highly prone to tearing or having the handles detach when carried.
  • Once the bag is stretched out of shape, it looks unsightly, cannot be displayed neatly on shelves, and is difficult to open and close during distribution.
  • If the bag is overfilled, the contents are likely to spill out when guests pick up or open the gift bag, significantly diminishing the on-site experience.

Tip: When packing, leave 15–20% of the gift bag’s volume empty to allow for some give; don’t fill every inch of the interior. Even if you have a lot of gifts, either choose a larger gift bag or pare down your gift list.

What other features could be added to these gift bag ideas?

Once you’ve decided on the base material, size, and design, adding just a few small details (ribbons, figurines, cards, etc.) is all it takes to make your gift bags stand out from the crowd without significantly increasing your project budget.

  • Personalized Name Tags: Printed with the event name and guest’s name to create a sense of exclusivity; particularly effective for birthdays, weddings, and corporate VIP events.
  • Functional Design: External card pocket for holding business cards, invitations, and thank-you cards.
  • Reinforced Construction: Cardboard-reinforced bag opening and riveted handles, designed for carrying heavy items.
  • Special Printing Techniques: Spot gold/silver foil stamping, pearlescent, glow-in-the-dark, and laser UV effects. These don’t require full-coverage application—even small accents can enhance sophistication while keeping production costs under control.
  • Matching Accessories: Pair with themed satin ribbons or cotton cord ties for simple tying. These add a ceremonial touch without requiring complex modifications to the bag itself.

Tip: In addition, you can use materials such as metal and rubber to create hangtags featuring your brand logo and IP characters, and turn them into charms to attach to gift bags. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also increases brand exposure.

Examples of Custom Gift Bag Ideas from Other Brands

Before you start designing for your project, we recommend checking out our real-world gift bag ideas. Here, you can find elements that you can directly incorporate into your project:

Holiday Highlights

When designing holiday gift bags, many clients assume that simply printing a holiday motif is all it takes to complete the project. But in real-world projects, outstanding gift bag designs go beyond surface-level printing—much of the ingenuity lies in the structure, interactive details, and added features. These elements transform the bag itself into part of the holiday experience and may even encourage consumers to take photos and share them, generating social media exposure for your brand.

Christmas

Take, for example, a North American home fragrance brand we once worked with. These gift bags were intended not only as freebies for purchases above a certain amount but also to be displayed on supermarket shelves for individual sale. The initial design draft provided by the client featured the standard full-print pattern of large snowflakes and Christmas trees, paired with ordinary cotton rope handles—a Christmas gift bag design commonly found on the market.

During our discussions, we discovered that the biggest pain point for this project was that, during the holiday season, consumers had to purchase greeting cards separately after buying their gifts. Many customers carry a gift bag while holding a separate greeting card in their hand, making it easy for the card to get lost or crushed and creased. Based on this real-life user scenario, we added a hidden vertical card pocket in the upper-left corner of the bag’s interior—perfectly sized to hold a standard-sized holiday greeting card. Consumers don’t need to secure the card with extra tape; it stays securely tucked inside the bag and is revealed when the gift is removed. Visually, we avoided a full-coverage, busy Christmas pattern, opting instead for a small gold-foil snowflake in the lower-right corner of the bag, while preserving the paper’s natural color across the rest of the surface. We added a small cutout loop at the end of the handle, allowing consumers to hang the gift bag directly on their Christmas tree as a temporary decoration; before the gift is given, the bag itself can serve as festive home decor.

After hitting retail shelves, this hidden greeting card pocket received positive feedback from many store associates. Numerous customers specifically chose this gift bag because they appreciated the convenience of not having to prepare a separate greeting card. The promotional gift version retained the exact same design concept but omitted some of the gold foil stamping to control costs, and it also received favorable feedback from users.

Note: When designing creative holiday gift bags, there’s no need to simply pile on holiday motifs. Identifying minor pain points in the gift-giving process and integrating additional features into the bag’s structure often resonates more deeply with end customers than elaborate printed designs—and it also makes it easier for your brand to establish a competitive edge through differentiation.

Halloween

This was a pop-up event project for a European beauty brand (the name of which we cannot disclose). The gift bags were used as free gifts included with orders and distributed at in-person nighttime pop-up parties. The client’s initial design concept was simply to print ordinary illustrations of pumpkins and bats on a standard black gift bag.

Considering that most pop-up events take place outdoors at night—when the Halloween atmosphere is at its peak—we proposed upgrading the static print to an interactive design. The main body of the bag retains a simple, dark background, while the outlines of bats and ghosts are printed with glow-in-the-dark ink. During the day, these appear as subtle, understated patterns, but once in the dark, the designs spontaneously emit a faint green glow, perfectly complementing the nighttime party atmosphere. In addition, the bag’s opening features a die-cut design resembling a monster’s jagged bite marks. When users reach inside to grab candy or makeup samples, the jagged outline of the opening looks like a monster opening its mouth, creating a playful interactive experience. A simple blank writing area is also reserved on the inside of the bag, allowing partygoers to jot down funny messages on the spot, adding an element of fun when handing out gifts.

Once these gift bags were distributed at the pop-up event, the glow-in-the-dark effect inspired many young people to take photos spontaneously, generating a significant amount of user-generated content on social media—far exceeding the client’s original expectation of simply creating basic packaging.

Note: The core of the Halloween gift bag’s creative concept lies in its interactive nature. By making effective use of techniques such as special inks and die-cutting, the bag can produce different effects under varying lighting conditions and during different uses, transforming ordinary packaging into dynamic promotional material.

Thanksgiving

This was a custom project for a regional supermarket chain in the U.S. The gift bags were intended for community charity giveaways and as Thanksgiving take-home gifts sold in-store, designed to hold Thanksgiving-themed gifts such as nuts, cookies, and jarred honey. The client’s initial proposal featured standard flat-print designs of wheat ears and pumpkins, lacking any additional creative flair.

The essence of Thanksgiving is expressing gratitude, and we wanted the gift bags themselves to convey this sentiment—not just serve as containers for items. Therefore, we reserved a large matte white space on the front of the bag specifically for handwritten messages, framed by a thin, light-colored decorative border. This eliminates the need for separate cards; gift-givers can write their personal messages directly on the bag with a marker. The exterior pattern does not cover the entire surface; instead, low-saturation embossed wheat ears and berry elements are placed only in the corners, leaving the visual focus on the blank space for handwritten messages. We also designed the handles as braided jute ropes, with small paper tags attached to the ends. These tags feature pre-printed templates for simple Thanksgiving phrases, allowing users to add their own brief messages.

Whether used for community charity distributions or purchased by consumers as gifts for family and friends, people have really appreciated this design that allows for handwritten blessings. Many customers have opted not to buy additional greeting cards, choosing instead to write their messages directly on the surface of the gift bag.

Note: Not all holiday-themed ideas need to rely on a jumble of flashy designs. By capturing the emotional essence of the holiday and giving users room to participate and create their own versions, gift bags can transform from mere packaging into vessels for conveying emotions. This approach keeps implementation costs manageable while setting your product apart from run-of-the-mill gift bags on the market.

Business Activities

Business settings don’t necessarily call for a minimalist, blank design where simply printing a logo is enough (though it certainly shouldn’t be too flashy). However, a well-designed business gift bag strikes a balance between simplicity and flair, taking into account both the brand image and the user’s actual experience, while subtly reinforcing brand recognition.

Business Souvenirs

This was a custom project for a major North American manufacturing company. The gift bags are used for employee anniversary recognition, internal awards, and as small business gifts for external exchanges. The client’s initial design proposal was very conservative: a solid black bag with only the company logo printed in the lower right corner, leaving the rest completely blank—the most common template for business gift bags on the market.

While analyzing the usage scenarios, we noticed a key detail: during on-site award ceremonies, staff members need to simultaneously distribute commemorative gift boxes, certificates of honor, and commemorative cards. When traditional gift bags are opened, all items end up piled together in a single large compartment, making it easy for the certificates to be crushed and creased by the rigid commemorative gift boxes. This often leads to chaos at the ceremony, with certificates frequently emerging wrinkled.

To address this pain point, we did not alter the overall understated, business-like aesthetic. The exterior of the bag remains simple, featuring only a small silver-foil branded logo. Instead, we focused all our creativity on the bag’s internal structure: we added a vertical divider pocket inside the bag specifically designed to hold certificates and cards, while the rigid commemorative gift box is placed in the main compartment. By physically separating the certificates from the gift box, we prevent them from being crushed, scratched, or damaged during transportation and the award ceremony. Additionally, on the inner side of the handle base, we added a very small, hidden embossed inscription featuring a brief corporate anniversary slogan. Completely invisible from the outside, it is only noticed when the recipient opens the bag to retrieve the items—a subtle, understated detail that does not detract from the bag’s dignified exterior.

After delivery, at the anniversary awards ceremony, the issue of creased certificates was significantly reduced. Many employees noticed the embossed slogan on the inside, which enhanced the sense of ceremony associated with the gift. During external business gift exchanges, the neat and organized internal structure also left a favorable first impression on partners.

Note: When designing business souvenirs, avoid overly flashy or ostentatious ideas. Prioritize subtle, internal design elements—such as optimizing storage structures and incorporating understated, hidden details—to maintain a professional, understated tone while setting the gift apart from run-of-the-mill, mass-produced gift bags.

Business Meeting

This project involved producing a large batch of custom gift bags for a major European industrial summit, to be distributed to every attendee. The client’s initial design was straightforward: the bag’s exterior featured the summit logo and theme slogan, while the interior consisted of a single, spacious compartment with no additional compartments.

We reviewed the attendees’ entire usage process: After receiving the bag, attendees would place their conference badges, handbooks, notebooks, pens, and promotional materials inside; During breaks between sessions, as they move back and forth between meeting rooms and exhibition halls, attendees frequently take their badges out and put them back, often tossing them haphazardly to the bottom of the bag, making it a hassle to repeatedly rummage through it; after the event, attendees also collect a large number of promotional flyers from exhibitors, causing the contents to pile up—with items of varying sizes jumbled together.

Based on these real-world behaviors, we implemented several structural and design optimizations. We added an external diagonal slip pocket to the side of the bag, sized specifically to fit the attendee badge, allowing participants to quickly retrieve or insert it without opening the bag’s main opening. The exterior of the bag features no unnecessary graphics—only the summit logo printed in a spot color—to maintain a professional and dignified visual appearance. Inside the bag, we incorporated two simple compartments: one side for thick manuals and notebooks, and the other for loose flyers, pens, and small items, preventing all materials from becoming jumbled together. Additionally, the bag’s opening was reinforced with a subtle embossed crease, making it resistant to wrinkling and curling even after repeated opening and closing—ideal for the high-intensity demands of a multi-day conference.

During the summit, many attendees frequently used the exterior ID card pocket, eliminating the need to repeatedly rummage through the bag’s contents. Even after several days of meetings, the gift bag remained flat, with no curling or deformation. Many attendees took the bags home after the event for continued daily use, providing ongoing, indirect exposure for the summit’s brand.

Note: The creative concept behind conference gift bags should be based on the attendees’ entire day’s activities. Don’t limit your thinking to simply “holding materials”; addressing real-world usability challenges on-site is what makes for a highly cost-effective design.

High-end customers

This project serves a high-end corporate gift provider in North America; the gift bags are used for executive visits and to express gratitude to VIP clients. The client’s initial concept was that “high-end” equated to complex and expensive craftsmanship, so they planned to feature extensive gold foil stamping and intricate patterns across the bag’s surface, incorporating every possible luxurious technique.

However, there is a crucial practical consideration in VIP gift-giving scenarios: after an executive opens the gift bag and removes the gift box, the bag itself will remain in the recipient’s office. Overly flashy or ostentatious patterns and extensive hot stamping would appear gaudy and out of place in an office setting, making it highly likely that the bag would be discarded immediately. Luxury does not mean the more craftsmanship, the better; creativity must balance the ceremonial moment of gift-giving with the likelihood that the gift bag will be kept afterward.

Therefore, we rejected the idea of full-coverage gold foil patterns. We selected a special paper with a leather-like texture for the bag body, giving it a clean and understated appearance. The brand logo was embossed using a subtle debossing technique—free of eye-catching metallic colors—resulting in a luxurious feel yet a visually understated look. The creative focus is on the inner rim of the bag opening, featuring a continuous, subtle embossed pattern derived from the brand’s geometric symbols. This pattern is only revealed when the recipient opens the bag to place the gift box inside or remove it, creating a sense of ceremonial surprise in that fleeting moment—yet it remains completely invisible from the outside once the bag is closed. A detachable mini paper tag is attached to the end of the matching satin handle. The tag is left blank—without any pre-printed text—allowing the gift-giver to handwrite a brief message of thanks. The tag can be removed so it does not interfere with the bag’s subsequent use or storage.

When the entire gift set is presented, the hidden pattern on the inside of the bag’s opening offers just the right touch of luxurious surprise. Once the gift box is removed, the bag’s exterior remains simple and elegant, making it suitable for storing documents and small items in the office. This increases the likelihood that the gift bag will be kept and reused, thereby extending the brand’s exposure time.

Note: When designing gift bags for high-end VIP clients, it is essential to consider the bag’s fate after the gift has been presented. Overemphasizing flashy, outwardly ostentatious craftsmanship can easily lead to the bag being discarded immediately after use; subtle design details that are revealed only during interaction are better suited for high-end business settings.

Luxury and Affordability

Luxury ≠ cramming every possible gold foil stamping, embossing, and special finishing technique onto the surface; and affordability ≠ sacrificing creative design just to slap on a logo and call it a day. Is that a little hard to grasp? Take a look at our real-world examples:

luxury gift bag

This was a custom gift bag project for a premium jewelry and accessories brand, designed for use in physical stores when handing over jewelry gift boxes to customers. The client’s initial design direction to the factory was very straightforward: since these are luxury items, the bags must be eye-catching. The plan was to cover the entire bag with opulent floral patterns and extensive gold foil stamping to maximize the visual impact.

We re-examined the creative logic by considering real-world usage scenarios: When customers receive a jewelry gift bag, most will open it right in the store. After removing the jewelry gift box, the bag isn’t immediately discarded; many consumers take it home to store jewelry and small items. If the exterior print is overly elaborate and flashy, it would look gaudy when displayed at home and would likely be thrown away. A sense of luxury doesn’t rely on superficial showmanship; the true creativity lies in the interactive experience the moment the bag is opened.

We abandoned full-coverage color prints and large-scale foil stamping. The exterior of the bag retains the natural, delicate texture of special leather-textured paper, featuring only a single, shallow embossed brand logo, giving it a minimalist and understated appearance. The true creative design is located along the entire inner rim of the bag opening, featuring a continuous pattern of delicate starlight embossing that is completely hidden when the bag is closed. When the customer opens the bag to remove the jewelry gift box, the starlight embossing on the inside is fully revealed, creating a sense of ritual and surprise the moment the box is opened. The matching satin handle is not permanently attached; instead, it features a detachable design. Users can easily remove the ribbon and use it to tie up the jewelry gift box, making it a dual-purpose accessory.

Since its launch, feedback from stores has been very positive. Many consumers notice the hidden embossed pattern on the inside when opening the bag. Because of its elegant and understated appearance, the bag is frequently taken home to store small accessories, significantly extending the brand’s exposure cycle.

Note: When designing luxury gift bags, the focus doesn’t necessarily have to be on the exterior. Incorporating hidden details through the act of “opening” the bag maintains a subtle, sophisticated exterior while providing the user with a surprise upon unboxing—a far more refined approach than simply covering the bag with large areas of metallic printing.

cheap gift bag ideas

A summer street pop-up event project for a U.S. discount retail brand required a large quantity of gift bags for outdoor distribution, to be exported to Europe, with a very tight budget. The client’s initial idea was that, given the limited budget, there was no room for creative design—simply printing the event logo would suffice. The vast majority of low-cost promotional gift bags on the market are indeed produced this way: they’re all cookie-cutter, and consumers toss them aside immediately after receiving them, leaving virtually no impression.

A limited budget doesn’t mean sacrificing design ingenuity. While we couldn’t incorporate expensive techniques like foil stamping, embossing, or specialty paper, we instead focused on low-cost creativity through printing layout and die-cutting details. We continued to use cost-effective laminated kraft paper as the material, opted for single-color printing, and avoided adding expensive post-press processes.

Visually, rather than placing the event logo stiffly in the center, we scattered the brand slogan and event graphics along the top edge of the bag, creating a circular, delicate line decoration. This approach doesn’t incur significant ink costs but sets the bag apart from generic, mass-produced bags with logos centered in the middle. A simple, small die-cut notch was added near the bag’s opening. This notch serves more than just a decorative purpose; users can slip event stickers or small badges into it to secure them, giving young people participating in the pop-up event a bit of hands-on fun. A small blank area for doodling was reserved in the lower right corner of the bag, allowing participants at the event to make simple sketches on the spot and give the bag a personal touch.

The entire design did not significantly increase material costs and still meets EU EPR export compliance requirements. When distributed on the street, this bag stood out from the sea of generic promotional gift bags. Because passersby could doodle on and customize it, some chose not to discard it immediately after receiving it, indirectly boosting the event’s promotional reach.

Note: Even with a limited budget for gift bags, don’t give up on creativity. Avoid high-cost post-production processes; instead, focus on layout design, simple die-cutting, and leaving room for users to customize the bags themselves. This way, you can achieve a high-end look at a very low cost—without having to rely on a pile of production techniques to stand out.
